Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
HURLEY - The kindergartners through sixth graders in the Hurley Schools got a break from their normal class schedules on March 27 as the Iron County Health Department held its annual health fair in the school's gym.
Each class spent about 30 minutes in the gym, according to Iron County Health Officer Zona Wick, where they were divided into groups and rotated through the various organizations that were part of the event. This flow helped keep the students organized, Wick explained, while ensuring that there was enough variety that the students didn't get bored.
"The goal (of the fair) was to teach healthy lifestyles to students," said Wick. "... the kids really enjoy it, the teachers really enjoy it, so we've continued it every year."
The fair started in 2006 with a grant for education on underage drinking, Wick explained, and has grown to encompass a number of topics regarding nutrition, safety and living a healthy lifestyle.
The health department was joined by the Hurley Police Department, Northlakes Community Clinic Dental Project, University of Wisconsin's Iron County Extension Office, Iron County Human Services Department, Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, DOVE Inc. and Aspirus Grand View Hospital. Each group had a table where they could provide the students with information, Wick said, and generally gave the kids something to take home.
