IRONWOOD - It appears that the city of Ironwood's strategy of seeking new bids for the demolition of the former Kenny's Studio building next to the Carnegie Library has paid off.
Last year, the city commission sought bids for demolition and removal of the building at 227 E. Aurora St. and the only bid that was received came from Jake's Excavating, of Ironwood, for $75,000.
City manager Scott Erickson said he was confident lower bids would come in this spring and he was correct, as the apparent low rebid has come from Ross Peterson Construction, of Hurley, for $31,980.
According to the agenda for Monday's city commission meeting, two other bids came in - from Angelo Luppino, of Iron Belt, Wis., at $38,884, and Superior Excavation, at $48,600.
The city commission will take formal action on awarding the bid at its 5:30 p.m. Monday meeting in commission chambers on the second floor of the Memorial Building.
The parcel that contains the former photography studio building was donated to the city by the family of the late Kenny Aho.
Commissioners accepted the donation on behalf of the library.
The building is beyond repair and will be torn down to create more space for outdoor library activities.
