IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Ironwood started off the soccer season with a 2-1 loss to perennial Northern Lights Conference power Three Lakes Tuesday.
Ironwood coach Don Cvengros thought his Red Devils were in trouble going into the game. With spring break, they haven't practiced at all yet. Thirteen of the 18 girls were available to play Tuesday and a half dozen are new to the game.
The ball was in the Bluejays' end much of the warm and sunny evening, but Ironwood played solid defense and made it a game.
"They controlled the action; our defense played really well," Ironwood coach Don Cvengros said.
Three Lakes scored once in the first half and then took a 2-0 lead in the second half.
The Red Devils scored with about three minutes left in the game.
Freshman Makenzie Marshall took a pass from Katie Erickson and dribbled past three defenders and beat the goalie for a goal.
"To come back and score that goal, that was huge for our confidence," Cvengros said. "We're a little bit dinged up. We have a couple injuries. Hopefully we'll get these kids back and keep working in practice. We'll get better. I can see there's talent there. Once we get into a full practice schedule and start working. I'm pretty happy with how these kids are working."
Ironwood (0-1, 0-1) go to Washburn on April 23.
