HURLEY - Kamryn Swartz, 9, entered the Daily Globe's Mother's Day essay contest as a project with her class at the Hurley K-12 School. Along with gifts she and her classmates made, they also wrote the essays for their mothers.
And Kamryn won with her essay entitled, "Why My Mom is the Queen of all Moms."
"It had to be over 50 words and it couldn't go over 300," Kamryn said. "I did exactly 300 words."
And she wished that she could have added a lot more to it. Kamryn said she and her classmates worked on their essays for about 15 minutes every day.
Her mother, Alaina, is being kept in suspense over the essay.
"I haven't read it yet so I'm looking forward to reading it this weekend," Alaina told the Daily Globe Thursday.
Alaina was also unaware that her daughter was even writing an essay for her.
"Kamryn just said that they were making a Mother's Day gift and that I was going to really like it," Alaina said.
Kamryn found out Wednesday evening that she was the big winner. Her parents had found out earlier that afternoon.
"My husband works at the Hurley school and had called me during the day. So it was a good surprise for Kamryn," Alaina said.
"She was really excited. She was running around the house and cheering."
The Swartz family has special plans for Mother's Day to cook out, depending on the weather. And Kamryn plans to give her mom her gift then.
"It's going to be nice to hear what she has to say. She is just an amazing daughter, big sister and friend," Alaina said.
"I was just really proud to hear that she won."
Kamryn is the daughter of Alaina and Mike Swartz of Hurley.
Editor's note: Entries into the Daily Globe's Mother's Day essay contest were judged by Daily Globe staff. Alaina won a bouquet of flowers for her mother and a gift certificate.
