IRONWOOD — Downtown Ironwood will revert to the 1950s for a day on Saturday, June 20.
Aurora Street will be closed from 2 to 10 p.m. between Lowell and Suffolk for a Historic Ironwood Theatre “Grease” sing-along retro celebration that will also include a Klassic Kruisers antique auto show.
The city commission on Monday gave its approval for closure of the street.
Bruce Greenhill, managing director of HIT, appeared before the commission to request the closure.
Commissioner Dave Sim said it was an “awesome” idea that will give the small downtown businesses a boost.
The “Sing-along Grease” presentation will be at 7 p.m., but a variety of on-street activities are planned before then, according to Greenhill.
The Awkward Stage Drama Club and Ironwood Dance Company will participate.
Plans call for setting up an outdoor stage where the drama club kids can sing some of the songs from the popular movie and 1950s-style dance lessons will be demonstrated.
“I hope that come June 20, all commissioners will dress up in the appropriate ‘50s attire and join in the fun,” Greenhill wrote in his letter requesting the street be closed.
Closing the street will allow the antique automobiles to angle park.
Approval will also be required from the Michigan Department of Transportation for the street closure, but that appears to be a mere formality.
