Hurley's Nickel breaks sister's school record

ASHLAND, Wis. - Hurley freshman Aiyana Nickel set a school record in the triple jump at Thursday's Welker Invitational.

Her jump of 31-6 broke the record set by her sister Teressa Leinon by half an inch. Leinon's former record was 31-5.5. Nickel finished fourth in the event Thursday.

Mercer's Lexi Engler won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Mercer's Sydney Thompson finished first in the shot put and discus. Thompson beat South Shore/Washburn's Megan Gustafson by eight feet in the discus and 10 inches in the shot put.

Mercer's Caitlyn Hiller won the 100 hurdles. Mercer's 400 relay team won.

Chequamegon won the girls event with Mercer fourth and Hurley fifth.

Hurley's Kris Bluse picked up a victory in the long jump.

Ashland won the boys team event with Hurley fifth and Mercer sixth.

The Indianhead Conference track-and-field meet is Monday at Hurley. A chance of snow was mentioned in the forecast.
