NORWAY - Ishpeming ended Ironwood's softball season with a 10-0 victory in five innings at Thursday's MHSAA Division 4 District 97 softball quarterfinal.
The Devils missed opportunities to score. With runners at second and third with one in the third inning, a baserunner didn't tag up. Ishpeming then scored unearned four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the bases were loaded with one out, but a pop up and a strikeout ended the inning.
"Kind of the story of the year, we give up three earned runs and lose 10-0," Ironwood coach Tim Routheaux said.
Alyssa Huotari started and took the loss. She went 3 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing eight runs (two earned), four hits, seven walks and two hit batters. Kacie Lundin finished, allowing a hit and two runs (one earned) in a third of an inning. Ironwood didn't record an out in the fifth, when Ishpeming scored those two runs.
Lundin and Jamee Bastman had hits for Ironwood.
A storm moved through after the fourth inning. It dropped so much rain that the game had to be moved to a different field. There was also hail.
The Red Devils finished the year at 5-15.
"Lot of growing pains this year," Routheaux said.
A large group of players returns for next season with a promising group also coming up from junior high, he said.
