ASHLAND, Wis. – Janet Mae Lincoln Giacherio, 80, of Washburn, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, Aug. 2, 2015, at the Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. A silent warrior has gone home to rest.
The former Janet Mae Lincoln Jones was born on Dec. 7, 1934, in Winchester, Mass., the daughter of Elmer Winchel and Dorothy Mae (Lincoln) Jones. She graduated from high school in Medford, Mass., and continued her education at Santa Monica (Calif.) Junior College and UCLA.
Janet was employed by the U.S. State Department Foreign Service. Her first posting was to the American Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, followed by a tour of duty in Nicosia, Cyprus. She was then assigned to Guayaquil, Ecuador followed by a six-month tour of duty to Porto Alegre, Brazil. Janet was then sent to the Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, where she met her future husband, Gordon J. Giacherio, who was also employed by the Foreign Service. Upon leaving Bogota, she was then assigned to Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, followed by a posting to Recife, Brazil. In 1968, after 12 years of service, Janet resigned from the Foreign Service.
On July 27, 1968, she and Gordon were married at the Guardian Angel Cathedral in Las Vegas, Nev.
Janet worked in the office at Northwest Independent Insurance Agency in Bessemer, Mich., for the next 30 years, prior to retiring.
After her retirement, she and Gordon spent the winters at their home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Gordon; two cousins, Carol Lincoln Myers (Larry) and Judith Lincoln Abel (James); her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Mary Ann Giacherio; her sister-in-law, Bonnie Giacherio; two nephews, James (Rena) Giacherio and Jerry Giacherio Jr .; a niece, Gina (David) King; and several great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Gordon Eaton; a cousin, Gail Lincoln Lear; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, James L. and Caroline A. Giacherio.
A private funeral service will be held at the Lakeside Memorial Chapel in Wakefield, Mich. The Rev. Todd Winkler, pastor of Cornerstone Church in Ramsay, Mich., will officiate.
Committal services and entombment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Memorial Medical Center and the Regional Hospice Services Inc., for their kindness and care that was given to Janet.
