August in Ironwood was a month of extremes, with very hot weather around mid-month followed by cool temperatures in the fourth week.
Kevin Crupi, of the National Weather Service office in Marquette, noted since the extremes balanced out, the average temperature in Ironwood for August of 63.2 degrees was about one degree below the long-term norm.
In the Aug. 23-27 period, mean daily temperatures fell as low as 10 to 15 degrees
below normal.
High temperatures in the 50s were common on Aug. 24-25.
Precipitation for the month totaled just 2.56 inches, below the long-term norm of 3.37 inches.
The high temperature was 89 on Aug. 15, a day that saw many Gogebic Range communities reach the mid-90s. The low was 39 on Aug. 27.
Across the Upper Peninsula, the same weather pattern held out and temperatures at most locations were within one degree of normal.
The highest temperature was 95 at Munising on Aug. 16.
On Aug. 27, .many inland places in the U.P. saw the mercury sink into the
chilly 30s, including the monthly low of 32 near Covington in
Baraga County.
Elsewhere in the U.P. for August:
-Watersmeet received 3.69 inches of rain.
- Greenland, in Ontonagon County, averaged 63 degrees and had 2.55 inches of rain.
-Bergland dam, in Ontonagon County, averaged 62.8 degrees and had 2.69 inches of rain.
-The greatest monthly precipitation was 5.45 inches at Amasa in Iron County, while the low was 1.67 inches at Baraga.
Warm September
With one week left in September, the average temperature in Ironwood for the month as of Wednesday was 63.2 degrees, more than 6 degrees above average. The record is 66.6 degrees in 1908.
Rainfall was up to 4.67 inches for the month, above the long-term Sept. 23 average of 3 inches.
