Ironwood — Nancy Korpela has been appointed to the Ironwood Planning Commission.
Mayor Kim Corcoran made the appointment last week.
During the meeting, Korpela discussed how she has opened a business incubator downtown at 320 E. Aurora St.
Called 906Boom!, Korpela purchased the old Elks Club, more recently known as the Tori House, as a MakerSpace. She describes it as a place “where people can come together to create, invent, tinker and learn with all sorts of materials, equipment and tools.”
There are seven mini businesses at the address, offering jewelry, photography, pottery, stained glass and home decor, among other items.
“While some MakerSpaces specialize in certain subjects, our MakerSpace is working to provide a wide variety of classes and programs for everyone with an interest in almost anything,” Korpela said.
That includes Tai Chi.
Commissioner David Sim was enthused about the business incubator locating downtown. “I hope you have awesome success,” he told Korpela.
The name 906Boom! stands for the Ironwood area telephone code and the sound that is made when something is accomplished, Korpela said.
