ONTONAGON, Mich. — Helen Miles Haas, 88, of Ontonagon, passed away Nov. 1, 2015, at the Aspirus Long-Term Care Unit with her loving family by her side.
Helen was born Nov. 21, 1926, in Laona, Wis., to Henry and Alice (Gerrard) Running. She was a 1946 graduate of Ontonagon High School. In January 1946, Helen married Donald Miles in Ontonagon. He preceded her in death on April 20, 1973. She later married Carl Haas in February 1985. Carl preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 2001.
Helen was a 1974 graduate of Gogebic Community College, and began working at Ontonagon Memorial Hospital in the fall of that year. She remained employed there as an LPN until her retirement. She was a member of the VFW Post 5600 Ladies Auxiliary. In her retirement, she was involved with hospice and the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home. She also enjoyed knitting, baking, camping and spending time with her family.
Helen will always be remembered for her love of cats.
Helen is survived by her children, Debbie Miles and Jim (Pam) Miles, of Ontonagon, and Barb Miles (Jim Lewis), of Greenland; stepchildren, Cis Warren, Joe (Linda) Haas and Deb (Bruce) Seid, all of Ontonagon; grandchildren, Shari (Connie) Ellison, of Iron Mountain, Jim (Dani) Miles, of Cloverdale, Ind., Don (Lauren) Miles, of Ontonagon, and Margaret Lewis and Willie Lewis, of Greenland; great-grandchildren, Aydan and John Miles, of Ontonagon, and Lillie Miles, of Cloverdale; eight stepgrandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; special adopted grandchildren, Mike Mansell and Brandon Yakovich, of Ontonagon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Alice; husbands, Donald and Carl; daughter, Sandi Ellison on Dec. 11, 1989; very special cousin, Allen Gerrard and his wife, Joyce; nieces, Cindy Miles, Kathy Stipanovich and Mona Daque; and nephews, Scott Miles and James Schuman.
Funeral services for Helen will be held Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at 1 p.m. at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the time of service. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery.
