Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
IRONWOOD - In honor of the local veterans, the American Legion Post No. 5 hosted a Veteran's Day program Saturday evening at the Ironwood Memorial Building.
Approximately 70 veterans came together to honor their country and salute fellow veterans.
The program began with a presentation of the colors by Ironwood Junior ROTC members, followed by the national anthem and Pledge of Allegiance.
Before the veterans got up to get their meal, Gary Harrington, a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, gave a speech in honor of the occasion.
"Veterans are the nation's unsung heroes," he said.
After he was done, people lined up for a turkey dinner buffet.
Eating his dinner, Gary Kusz said he was a Marine in the Vietnam War and spent 24 years in the National Guard.
Kusz said he thinks it's important to serve the country.
"Serving instills patriotism," he said. "It's important to serve because it gives a feeling about what this country is all about."
Kusz said his food was "delicious" and enjoyed dining with fellow comrades.
"It's nice to see people you served with," he said. "There's always been a service rivalry, but we get along because they're still comrades."
