BESSEMER - A small, but enthusiastic crowd gathered Saturday evening to light Bessemer's Christmas tree.
Mayor Kathy Whitburm addressed the 15 people who showed up for the tree-lighting at the corner of Sophie and Mary streets.
"We hope to make this a tradition and are trying to revive it," Whitburn said of possibly expanding the community gathering in the future, as the tree grows.
The group joined in singing "Jingle Bells."
Donna Frello, of the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce, said it was the fourth consecutive year the ceremony had been held.
Mother Nature cooperated by dumping about four inches of snow earlier in the week, covering much of the tree.
The participants were then invited to sip some hot chocolate on a 25-degree evening.
