Ironwood — A dreaded “wintry mix” was predicted today by the National Weather Service for Ironwood, with up to three inches of snow and ice possible.

There was an 80 percent chance of precipitation today, with a high of 34 forecast.

Snow was also possible for Wednesday.

The NWS said much of the region may see from 4 to 6 inches by the time the snow ends tonight. The snow is expected to come from the south to north.

A winter weather advisory was in effect from 6 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The Weather Service was also forecasting snow of 4 to 6 inches for Duluth-Superior.

The storm hit rush hour in Minneapolis-St. Paul on Monday, causing 145 accidents and 101 reports of vehicles off roadways, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The snow is the result of a low-pressure system tracking from southern Minnesota into northern Wisconsin.

After the snow, mild temperatures are expected for the rest of the week in Ironwood, with highs near 40 on Thursday and Friday and sunshine.

After that, highs in the mid-30s are predicted through Dec. 9, according to the long-range forecast.

Ironwood ended November with 12.4 inches of snow, or only about one-half of the long-term average of 24.5 inches.

It’s quite a difference from one year ago, when one of the nastiest Novembers in Ironwood’s weather history struck. Before it was all over, four major storms had produced 89.2 inches of snow. The average temperature in November of 2014 was 21.2 degrees, compared to the long-term average of 29.8. For November 2015, the average temperature was 35.9 degrees.

A total of 5.36 inches of precipitation was recorded for November 2015, well above the average of 2.7 inches. The record high for November was 8.16 inches in 1991.
