IRON BELT, Wis. — The multi-day search for Iron Belt resident Alan Kangas, 68, ended Sunday with the discovery of his body at approximately 3 p.m.
According to a Saturday press release from the Iron County Sheriff’s Department, Kangas was reported missing Friday at approximately 1:49 p.m. and a search began involving multiple agencies. Numerous K-9 units and 80 community members aided in the search.
Iron County Sheriff Tony Furyk said in a statement Kangas was found in a wooded area in Iron Belt and the Iron County coroner was called to the scene.
Kangas’ son Adam said it appears Kangas got disoriented walking home from a neighbor’s house.
“It was snowing and there was no light out there and he made a wrong turn into the woods,” Adam told the Daily Globe Sunday evening.”
He said the body was discovered less than a mile from Alan’s house and was under some pine trees, making it hard to see him.
He also said there were no mental issues at play and Kangas simply got turned around in the dark.
Adam said the Kangas family wanted to thank those who helped in the search and said the family was thankful for all the community support.
No information has been released on the cause of death.
