Both the Ironwood Public Safety Department and the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post recently received community investment grants from Enbridge, Inc.

According to Brian Trekas, the safety coordinator for Enbridge's Superior Region, the IPSD received $2,500 to help purchase gas-monitoring equipment.

Trekas said the equipment can be used in a number of situations where it needs to be determined the amount of hazardous gases in the air, such as during suspected gas leak.

"What it's for, basically, is the the hazmat team ... if they are going to enter a hazardous, or potentially hazardous space, they use it for that," Trekas told the Daily Globe.

The IPSD is also expected to get an additional $2,500 for its fire department, according to Trekas.

The Wakefield post received a $1,250 grant to purchase a camera for the post.

Trekas explained the post normal receives $1,000 in grant funding but it got an extra $250 for completing an online training program regarding pipeline emergencies.
