Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

SAXON, Wis. — Roast beef was on the menu at the Saxon Community Center as the Saxon-Gurney Fire Department held its annual Raffle and Roast Beef Dinner fundraiser Sunday.
The annual event serves as a fundraiser for the department, according to Chief Stacy Ofstad.
“This year, probably, we’re going to be looking at getting some new radio equipment and some more pagers,” Ofstad said, explaining what the money would likely be used for. “Some of our radios are getting to be 15 years old, so we’re starting look at getting some of them updated.
“I mean in a small department there is always a budget need somewhere.”
Ofstad said the department has been running the fundraiser for almost 20 years, starting as a spaghetti feed during last weekend of deer season, before switching to a prime rib dinner then a steak feed. He said the roast beef dinners probably began six or seven years ago.
Along with the dinner of roast beef, mash potatoes and corn, the department raffled off a pair of rifles and had a 50/50 raffle.
He also noted that a number of other fire departments in the area — including Kimball, Ironwood Township, Montreal and Hurley — came out to support the fundraising effort.
According to organizers, over 190 tickets were sold for the dinner.
There are approximately 15 members of the department, Ofstad said.
