Bessemer — The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners agreed Wednesday to support a new community center and township offices for the town of Watersmeet.
Commissioners supported a grant application for the project, as outlined in a letter from Jerald Wuorenmaa of the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission.
Total cost of the Watersmeet project would be $1.4 million, with $1.3 million to come from U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development funding.
WUPPDR has been designated as the regional clearinghouse for the project by Gov. Rick Snyder.
WUPPDR will seek comments on the project.
The county board also offered its support for a Bessemer Township project application to renovate Memorial Park and for the Iron Belle Trail development.
Total cost of the Bessemer Township project would be $405,000, with $300,000 coming from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.
WUPPDR is also the regional clearinghouse for the Bessemer Township grant application, according to Wuorenmaa.
In other business on Wednesday, the county board granted a two-year pay raise to Kathy Jo Koval, an employee in the Gogebic County Equalization Department, as per the union contract.
