Thaw arrives early in Ontonagon County

ONTONAGON — The strange weather this winter adds another oddity to its records, an early thaw.

According to Ontonagon County Road Commission records, a thaw has begun on two of the three monitored highways in Ontonagon County. The frost is monitored to help determine spring break-up on U.S. 45 in Woodspur, U.S. 45 near Bruce Crossing and M-64. between White Pine and Bergland.

The frost measurement Wednesday showed the thaw has begun on both  U.S. 45 sites. In Woodspur, the tube was frozen to 42 inches and thawed 12 inches.

Near Bruce Crossing, the tube was frozen to 43 inches and thawed to 14 inches. M-64 remained frozen to 51 inches.

On Feb. 25, 2015, the tubes were frozen 55 inches in Woodspur, 56 inches in Bruce Crossing and 64 inches between White Pine and Bergland.

The thaw in the tubes in 2015 did not start until March 11. when they thawed 7 inches and 12 inches on the two U.S. 45 roads and were still frozen to 70 inches near Bergland.

The other two tubes were still frozen to 66 and 60 inches.

The three highways in Ontonagon County were not completely thawed in 2015 until April 22.
