Bessemer - Bessemer area middle-high school students explored possible job opportunities in the area during Career Day Thursday.
To fill the A.D. Johnston High School gymnasium, Brian Haanpaa, of Michigan Works, invited local businesses to participate. Haanpaa said more than 10 businesses were present for Career Day.
Students could explore careers in health care, cosmetology, machinery, counseling, forestry, communications, hospitality, restaurant management, construction-heavy equipment operations, electronics, law enforcement and art.
Students asked at least five business representatives three questions each. Questions were about career paths, strengths and skills needed, pay and other topics.
Curious about law enforcement, Olivia Romero talked to Luke Penrose, Department of Corrections Program Coordinator, about what it takes to work for the DOC and the starting salary.
At the Northern Michigan University booth, Jared Janczak and Brayden Tomes discussed continuing their education after high school with Jon Tiechman, NMU assistant director of admissions.
Dan VanderVelden, high school principal, said hopefully Career Day "gets students prepared and on the right direction."
VanderVelden said Career Day lets students know "they can get a four-year degree, or go to community college, and get a job here."
