Erwin Township chooses Eagle Waste, adds recycling program

ERWIN TOWNSHIP — Township residents will soon be able to recycle some of their garbage after the Erwin Township Board of Trustees approved a contract with Eagle Waste Wednesday.

The agreement will have township residents receive garbage collection twice a month and recycling collection once a month, according to township supervisor Larry Grimsby.

The township will pay $100 a month for garbage collection and $70 a month for recycling, Grimsby told the Daily Globe Friday, adding the new recycling service was something the township was looking for.

“(Recycling) was the big part of it. Lots of people out here said they wanted to go to recycling and so we’re very supportive of that,” Grimsby said.

The Dumpsters will be located at the township’s transfer station on Van Buskirk Road.

Waste Management, the township’s previous waste contractor, also submitted a bid but Grimsby said when all the variables — such as fuel surcharges and annual increases — were calculated, Eagle Waste offered a better deal.

“Their facility down there in Eagle River Wis., is top-notch, state-of-the-art and their recycling is second to none,” Grimsby said. “It’s going to benefit the township residents, and not only that, it’s going to benefit everybody (because of the new recycling program). ... They should have been doing recycling for a longer period of time, I think think environmentally it’s imperative we all work toward (the goal of recycling).”

He added he was aware of some township residents who haven’t been using the township’s garbage collection, but said they would likely start bringing their trash to the township’s facility now that recycling was included.

The agreement becomes effective on April 1.
