Ironwood - Gogebic Range residents were enjoying a last blast of spring-like weather on Tuesday, before predictions of a storm that could drop more than a foot of snow.

The temperature in Ironwood was 53 degrees at 1 p.m. Tuesday. A half-inch of rain was forecast for later in the day, to be followed by from 9 to 15 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

The thermometer was expected to fall and temperatures were predicted to remain under 40 for the next 10 days.

The weather service said today's snowfall would be from 8 to 12 inches and an additional 1 to 3 inches was possible for Thursday.

The culprit is an upper level air trough extending from Canada into the Western Plains, with a downstream extending from the Great Lakes to northwest Ontario.

The NWS at Marquette indicated the heavy snow would arrive by this afternoon.

Strong wind is also expected as the low pressure system moves through.

The heaviest snow is forecast from Ironwood to the Porcupine Mountains, according to the weather service, but the entire Gogebic Range was expected to receive some snowfall.

According to the weather service, there is a chance the storm track could change and that would make a big difference in snowfall amounts.
