Washington Elementary School honored

BESSEMER — The Mackinac Center for Public Policy recently presented Bessemer’s Washington Elementary School with an award for outstanding achievement.

Superintendent Dave Radovich said Washington School received an “A” rating from the MCPP. Radovich said the rating is based on demographics, student population and social economics.

Radovich said the award recognizes Washington Elementary to be among the top 224, or top 10 percent, of schools ranked.

Radovich credits the district’s staff, students and parents for the rating.

Radovich said parents in Bessemer have a history of being involved in their children’s education. He said parents play a big part their student’s success.

“Students score higher when their parents are involved in their education,” Radovich said. “I look at education as a three-legged stool. You have the school, the parents and the students. If one leg breaks, you fall over.”

Radovich said the district has veteran staff which works hard to influence the students in a positive way.

“They’re proud of our students and their achievements,” he said. “They go way above any expectations.”

According to its website, the MCPP is a nonpartisan research and educational institute dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Michigan residents by promoting sound solutions to state and local policy questions.
