Hurley - The Hurley High School music program tuned to a new idea in 1985 and more than 30 years later, the Silver Express is still alive and well, said director Beth Bordner.

This year's Silver Express Spectacular is set for next week Wednesday through Friday at 7 p.m. at the Hurley K-12 School auditorium.

Like in years past, Bordner said about 30 students auditioned to be part of the select group of students which puts on the popular annual show.

Since October, Bordner said each student has been working hard, rehearsing two to three nights per week. She said the show will be run by students. They will perform their own music while playing an arsenal of instruments, including guitar, drums, bass keyboards and trumpet.

"Some of the kids are talented on multiple instruments, so they will switch off," she said.

Behind the scenes, Jackie Vinopal has been tinkering with the sounds and the lights to make performance the best it can be.

"We're going to have visual effects and there will be a light show," Bordner said.

Over time, Bordner said the students have come a long way and the audience may get emotional during a few numbers at the show.

She said the students are very excited to perform and the show will be "very energetic." She said students will perform songs from the 1950s through today.

"We're hoping for a full house every night," she said.

In May, Bordner said the group will go on tour in Wisconsin. The Silver Express will perform in Arbor Vitae, Rhinelander and Stevens Point.

Tickets are on sale at the Hurley K-12 School in the high school office.
