Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — The Ironwood Township Board of Trustees added resurfacing work on a section of Lookout Lane as part of the township’s construction schedule Monday, on the condition the Bessemer Township board of trustees also contributes to the project.
According to information presented to the board, the costs of the project will be split three ways, among the two townships and the county road commission. The residents living on the road will also contribute the project, lowering the cost to both townships.
Township Supervisor Alan Baron said he talked with Bessemer Township Supervisor Jeff Randall and they agreed to split the residents’ $7,000 contribution between the two townships.
“We’d split that number in half — half to Ironwood Township, half to Bessemer Township — since the residents use both sides of the road and that would be the fair way to do it,” Baron said.
The contract with the Gogebic County Road Commission calls for the township to pay 30 percent — estimated to be roughly $11,928 — of the $39,760 project, with Bessemer Township paying another 30 percent and the road commission paying the remaining 40 percent.
The contribution from residents will be deducted from the township’s portion of the project.
“So for less than $10,000, we’re going to get a $39,000 road,” said Treasurer Jyl Olson-DeRosso.
The work will take place on the .85 miles of Lookout Lane between the end of the blacktop on Sunset Road and the end of Lookout Lane.
