Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
HURLEY — Motorized trail enthusiasts were in Iron County Memorial Day weekend to participate in the county’s 31st annual ATV/UTV weekend rally.
While there wasn’t an official count, Hurley Chamber of Commerce marketing and events coordinator Rita Franzoi estimates anywhere from 425 to 450 all-terrain vehicles and utility-task vehicles participated in Friday’s parade.
“Businesses were very pleased (with the turnout),” Franzoi said. “(There was) lots of activity.”
The parade turnout was down from last year’s numbers, which Franzoi said featured 289 UTVs and a total of 661 ATVs and UTVs. However, last year the chamber was attempting to break a Guinness World Record for most UTVs in a parade. The attempt was ultimately successful, although there was no previous record.
The weekend also saw over 175 participants in the poker run, Franzoi said.
Participants enjoyed the weekend, according to Franzoi.
“Comments have all been very positive, they all seemed to have a good time visiting the area,” she said. “I hope they come back in October for more fun, and throughout the summer.”
This year also featured some changes from previous years, including music at the staging area.
“We tried something new this year — with having music out in the field and vendors — and people seemed to really like that idea too, so we’re going to build on that next year,” Franzoi said.
While there was some rain during the weekend, Franzoi suspected it actually improved the event as it kept the dust down.
Bill Hall, the owner of the Iron Horse Saloon, echoed Franzoi’s comments about the rain and the weekend’s success.
I had one of my best ones ever ... because it was perfect weather for one,” Hall said, “it was rainy, no dust, they’re still out on the trail, still going bar to bar doing their thing. I was very happy with (the weekend).”
