ONTONAGON — Ontonagon County will celebrate its heritage of mining and lumbering and fishing at the first Copper Fest celebration June 24-26. County-wide, many of the events will point to those historic industries.
On Friday, June 24, mine tours and lighthouse tours will be offered, as well as a beach bonfire. A boat parade will take place at 8 p.m., followed by fireworks at dusk
Saturday, June 25, will bring the U.P. Sports Fisherman’s Association Tournament from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. A captains meeting is set for 5:30 a.m. at the Marina. Top prize will be $1,000 for the largest fish. Register by June 24 by calling 906-884-2770.
Also Saturday, there will be a car and bike show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as a kids treasure hunt, crafts, food venders, paddle craft tours, ATV and ORV rides, live music and a street dance.
Sunday will begin with a lumberjack pancake breakfast before the Great Lakes Timber Show with chainsaw, carving, axe throw, log rolling, cross cut sawing.
There will also be bike tours along Lake Superior, a flea market, crafts and food venders, and Log Cabin Day at Old Victoria beginning at 10 a.m. near Rockland.
