HURLEY — A $250,000 grant to help bring a grocery store to Hurley will be announced at a Friday ceremony.
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation will join Hurley Mayor Joseph Pinardi and community and business leaders at the 10:30 a.m. ceremony at the former Super One site, off Tenth Avenue.
State officials will also be on hand.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Pinardi told the city council Tuesday, referring to the two-year struggle to get a grocery store to locate in the city.
Great Lakes Foods bought the former grocery store building. The new store will be run by the owners of the Pat’s IGA stores.
Pinardi said plans call for the store to be open by November.
“I’d like to see everybody come out and show their support,” the mayor said.
In other business Tuesday, the city council named Donald Packmayer first sergeant in the police department, based on his seniority. Former first sergeant Chris Colassaco is now police chief, taking over from Dan Erspamer, who retired.
The council learned officer Josiah Hewitt has taken a position with another department, so the city will be looking to hire another officer.
