Shirley A. Allen

DULUTH, Minn. - Shirley A. Allen, 63, of Ironwood, Mich., died Monday morning, July 11, 2016, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

The former Shirley Johnson was born Oct. 12, 1952, in Wakefield, Mich., daughter of the late Irving and Viola (Dal Pra) Johnson. She attended Wakefield schools and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood. She was employed as a seamstress at Munsingwear and Fox Point in Ironwood for several years, then became a certified nurse's aide and worked at Sky View Nursing Center in Hurley, Wis. She retired as activities director at Josephson Nursing Home in Ironwood in 2012.

Shirley enjoyed collecting ceramic pigs, needlepoint, sewing and playing bingo. She also loved Halloween and socializing with friends. Above all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed.

On June 27, 1970, she was married to Wayne R. Allen at the St. Ambrose rectory in Ironwood by the late Msgr. Joseph Dunleavy.

Surviving are her husband, Wayne, of 46 years; two sons, Carl Allen (Maria), Green Bay, Wis., and Wayne (Melissa) Allen Jr., Iron Belt, Wis .; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Alyssa, Wayne III and Amber Allen, and Cassandra, James, Jennifer and Rachel Allen; two great-grandchildren, Hazel Marie Ojaniemi and Karma Allen; two sisters, Marie Johnson (Amy Schultz), Baraboo, Wis., and Kathy (Pat) Oglesby, Ironwood; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Larry (Joyce) Allen, Texas, and Beverly (Brian) Tousignant and Debbie (John) Spaulding, all of Ironwood; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and her poodle, Snugs.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a brother, Carl Johnson.

Private family services will be held.
