ASHLAND, Wis — Most drivers can once again get to and from Ashland using U.S. 2, after the highway reopened for “car and light vehicle” traffic Saturday.
The highway had been closed after storms the night of July 11 washed out part of the road and caused the Bad River to flood over the roadway.
According to a post on the Ashland County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page, a detour around the Kakagon Bridge has been opened.
Heavy trucks and semis are prohibited from using this detour and must continue to use the established detour of U.S. 51, to Wisconsin 77, to Wisconsin 13 south, to Wisconsin 77 through Hayward to Trego and then north on U.S. 53.
The post also encourages motorists traveling in recreational vehicles or hauling trailers to avoid the detour due to its “tight confines.”
The department hopes the highway can be opened to all traffic by the end of the week, according to the post.
Wisconsin 13 near Ashland remains closed.
