IPSD officers apprehend man who sets Norrie house on fire

IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Public Safety Department responded to a 1:40 p.m. Tuesday afternoon fire in a house that followed a domestic disturbance.

IPSD Director Andrew DiGiorgio, at the scene around 2 p.m., said the fire at 246 W. Ash St. was intentionally set and criminal charges were pending.

He said a man had barricaded himself inside the house after a domestic dispute with a woman. IPSD officers were then able to gain entry to the residence and remove the suspect.

At that point, DiGiorgio said the fire had extinguished itself, but the house was still full of smoke. Neighbors near the scene said they could see smoke coming from the house earlier.

Officers wrestled with the suspect in subduing him, leaving a distraught female at the scene.

The man who was transported to Aspirus Grand View Hospital's emergency department faces a charge of domestic violence (third offense) and two counts of resisting and obstructing officers. DiGiorgio said the man is an Ironwood resident.

Officers originally responded to a report of a fire and a "combative" individual in the residence in the city's Norrie Location.

In addition to six IPSD officers and two volunteer firefighters, the Gogebic County Sheriffs Department, Michigan State Police, Hurley police and Beacon Ambulance personnel also responded on the hot afternoon.
