Hurley woman pleads to Gogebic drug charges

BESSEMER — A Hurley woman pleaded guilty in Gogebic County Circuit Court Tuesday to two drug charges as part of a plea agreement in a pair of cases against her.

Carolyn Elizabeth Kauffman, 23, pleaded guilty to one count of delivery of methamphetamine and one count of possession methamphetamine. According to court records, the counts stem from two different cases.

In exchange for the plea, the agreement calls for a second charge in each case to be dismissed.

One of the counts, in the case with the delivery of meth charge, is conspiracy to deliver meth. The other count is another deliver of meth charge.

Both of these two counts will be dismissed at sentencing, according to the plea agreement.

The delivery charge is a 20-year maximum felony, while the possession charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Gogebic County Prosecutor Nick Jacobs said the charges stemmed from a series of incidents in March.

According to Jacobs, one file involved a pair of drug transactions Kauffman was involved in on March 8 and March 14, while the other file related to a March 16 incident.

“Both files involved controlled buys through (the Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team) and the Ironwood Public Safety Department,” Jacobs said. “Again, these were controlled buys, undercover operations.”

The plea also stipulates that the sentences for the two crimes must be served concurrently.

Kauffman is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 12.
