Hurley - An aroma of authentic Italian food welcomed hundreds of people to downtown Hurley for Festival Italiano on Saturday.

To celebrate, festival goers dined on gnocchis, sausages, cannolis and other dishes, and burned off the extra calories by dancing to several musical acts.

In the morning, people could participate in a human foosball tournament. Similar to soccer, players tried to kick a ball into the other team's goal, but had to keep both hands on a pole. In the end, the Dew Crew team won the tournament.

In addition to music and food, visitors also browsed through a craft fair and kids were able to participate in a watermelon eating contest, get their faces painted or play basketball.

The crowd grew larger during the lunch hour, and remained strong as the band Lake Effect entertained the crowd.

Later on, Marty's Goldenaires performed in the street, playing a number of patriotic and classic rock tunes.

As Marty's performed a polka song, the Upper Peninsula Veteran of the Year, Thomas DeCarlo, danced with Brittany Perttula, of Ironwood. Afterwards the Allen Brothers Band performed.

The winner of the best antipasto recipe contest was announced. Hurley Area Chamber of Commerce Director Rita Franzoi said the winner was Jim Merritt, of Ironwood. Franzoi said this was Merritt's first time making an antipasto dish. Antipasto is another word for appetizers. Examples of antipasto include olives and cured meats.

Paul A. Sturgul Law Offices won the chamber's Italian decoration contest. The business' store front was on of many that were decked out for the day.

The winning 50-50 raffle ticket number was also announced. The ticket number is 7987903, and the prize is $1,700, Franzoi said.

Franzoi said the festival was a "wonderful" time.

"Excellent food, beautiful weather. Fun for everyone," she said. "Thanks to all the vendors and those who enjoyed Festival Italiano. We live in a wonderful community."
