A summer of violent thunderstorms continued into September as Tuesday brought more rain to the Gogebic Range.
The official weather station for the National Weather Service at the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant off Cloverland Drive recorded .76 inch of rain for the 24-hour period to 7 a.m. Tuesday. The skies rumbled throughout the night after a high of 79 degrees was recorded on Labor Day and more rain arrived later Tuesday amid a dismal forecast for the rest of the week.
The National Weather Service predicts a chance of thunderstorms today, Thursday and Saturday, with cooler temperatures.
The thunder and rain kicked off on Sunday night as a total of .61 inch fell for the 24-hour period to 7 a.m. Monday.
Since Jan. 1, 39.22 inches of precipitation has fallen on Ironwood, with the long-term average 22.78 inches, according to records compiled at the NWS Marquette office.
The August rain total for Ironwood was 4.49 inches, compared to the average over the past 115 years of 3.37 inches.
The average temperature for the year stands at 43.8 degrees, a bit above the long-term average of 42.4 degrees.
