Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
HURLEY — Iron County is distributing surveys in an effort to gather public input on the Saxon Harbor rebuilding process.
The survey, which is available both online and in paper copies, is open to anyone who uses Saxon Harbor, and are not limited to Iron County, or even Wisconsin, residents.
“We’re trying to get it out to everybody who’s interested in the harbor,” said Jason Laumann, the deputy director of the Northwest Regional Planning Commission.
The survey is available on the commission’s site — nwrpc.com/saxonsurvey — and Iron County’s website; as well as at the Iron County Clerk’s office, Forestry and Parks Department office, the Hurley library and the Mercer library.
The surveys are an early part of the planning stage of the process of rebuilding the harbor after it was destroyed in the July 11 storms and flooding.
“Reconstruction of harbor assets is critical to restoring economic stability to the region and ensuring safe navigation on Lake Superior. As focus shifts from response to recovery, a window of opportunity exists to develop a concept plan for the reconstruction of the harbor and adjoining area,” Laumann said in a press release. “The purpose of this survey is to collect public input which will help inform the planning and redevelopment of Saxon Harbor.”
The survey is funded by a $24,450 Coastal Management grant Gov. Scott Walker recently announced during an Aug. 29 visit to Saxon Harbor.
Saxon Harbor users can fill out the survey through Sept. 30.
