Ironwood - The city of Ironwood celebrated recent improvements to two area parks with a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday morning at Depot Park.
As rain fell, upwards of 10 city officials and residents gathered under the pavilion to celebrate electrical upgrades and other improvements to Curry Park and the new playground at Depot Park.
Mayor Annette Burchell thanked the city of Ironwood and its parks and recreation committee and community development for their role in helping to upgrade the electrical systems at Curry Park and installing other equipment there.
Lindquist Electric was the contractor of the project, funded by grants from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
Looking at the new playground, Burchell said its modern design is a culmination of the efforts by the parks and recreation committee and community development.
"I see children playing on it all the time," she said. "It fits with the historic nature of the beautiful park."
The playground was also funded using an MDNR grant. MDNR Porcupine Mountains Director Jeff Gaertner said they were proud to be a part of the two projects.
"We're happy to be able to help out and provide these great opportunities," he said.
The group made it's way to the park and cut the ribbon to celebrate the improvements made to both parks.
