GLIDDEN, Wis. - Harry C. Swanson, 81, of Glidden, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at his residence.
Harry was born Dec. 31, 1934, in Glidden, the son of Harry A. and Olga (Polzine) Swanson. He attended Shanagolden Grade School, Glidden High School and the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1957. He was involved in atomic testing in Nevada before going to the Korean War. On June 6, 1959, he was united in marriage to Beverly G. Anderson in Ewen, Mich.
He taught industrial arts and driver's education for more than 23 years. He then worked as an orderly at Ashland Memorial Medical Center for more than 10 years, after which he retired. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, as well as Trinity Lutheran Church in Glidden, serving in various offices and capacities.
Survivors include his children, Harry J. (Roberta) Swanson, of Bessemer, Mich., Gail Godbee, of Glidden, Donald Swanson, of New Richmond and Karen Zielinski, of Madison; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gloria Fleischfresser, of Park Falls.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Beverly; his parents; three sisters, Lorraine, Gladys and Clara, and his brother, Howard.
A funeral service for Harry will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Glidden, with Rev. Dale Heinlein officiating.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the church and continue until the hour of service.
Interment will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery in Glidden.
