Ironwood - The weather did not seem to deter locals from getting out to Luther L. Wright K-12 school Saturday for the annual Jack Frost Gingerbread House Workshop. Parents and kids busied themselves putting together gingerbread houses.

The contest started about 20 years ago according to Arlene Schneller, vice president of Snow Country Contracting and former coordinator of the event.

It has been held at different locations throughout the years such as schools and churches. Last year the workshop was also held at Luther L. Wright.

Since the workshops inception, it has grown both in number of entries for the contest and the number of volunteers helping out with the event, said Schneller.

One participant, Bella Gaiser, 9, has been building gingerbread houses since she was three years old. Addison Leppala has also joined her at the workshop in recent years.

Her designs for the houses have changed from year to year. This year she settled on a model of the Ironwood Carnegie Library.

According to her mother, Tammy Kann, she had decided on the library a few weeks ago and after researching images on the internet and making trips to the library, Gaiser built the base of the structure at home and brought it with her to the workshop.

When asked what she enjoys the most about the workshop, Gaiser said the decorating was her favorite part.

She also said that she likes to include graham crackers in her houses.

Once the houses are built, they are taken home and can be entered in the contest at River Valley Bank in Ironwood for a chance to win cash prizes.
