IRONWOOD, Mich. - Raymond L. Fleming, 86, of Bruce Crossing, passed away on Nov. 22, 2016, in Ironwood.
Ray was born on April 17, 1930, in Ewen, to the late Harry and Rena (Taylor) Fleming and was a graduate of Ewen High School, Class of 1947.
Ray served in the U.S. Army from May 1948 until April 1952, receiving the Army Combat, Korean Service and Good Conduct Medals; Bronze and Silver Stars; Army Combat Ribbon, and Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He was a proud veteran and life member of the Ewen American Legion Post 41 and member of the VFW Bruce Crossing Post 9345.
Ray and the late Martha S. Lindberg (1981) were married on April 4, 1953, building their home and raising four children in Bruce Crossing. He was employed by White Pine Copper Range for more than 40 years. Ray kept active with hunting, fishing, making wood, golfing and bowling. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and supporting his community.
Ray is survived by his daughters, Teresa Davis, of Big Pine Key, Fla., Judith (Chris) Fleming-Berger, of Bruce Crossing, and Sandra (Bob) Vander Zee, of Delavan, Wis .; daughter-in-law, Karen Andrus; grandchildren, Tyler and Wade (Melinda) Fleming, Luke Berger, and Anne, David and Michael Vander Zee; great-grandchildren, Isaac Berger, Aybri Sorensen, Lillianna Fleming, and Cierra and Savanna Fleming; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved sister, Dorothy Miesbauer, of Ontonagon.
In addition to his parents and wife, Ray was preceded in death by his son, Edward, in 1988; an infant grandson, Matthew Vander Zee, and his siblings, Jeanne, Glen, Robert, James and Thomas.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m., EST, at the Ewen United Methodist Church located at 621 Highway M-28, with Pastor Theodore Trudgeon presiding. Visitation will be held the hour prior to the funeral. Military rites will be accorded by Ontonagon County Veterans Association Honor Guard. A luncheon will be held at the American Legion Hall following the service. Spring inurnment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Bruce Crossing.
