Wakefield - Area shoppers had another chance to buy local, while completing their Christmas shopping Saturday as the Wakefield Historical Society held its annual Old Fashioned Christmas Faire at the Wakefield Veterans of Foreign Wars hall.

This year's event featured approximately 45 tables, filled by around 26 vendors, according to society board member Harold Schroeder.

"We have a wide variety of crafts and bakery goods," he said.

While he has only been involved for the last five or six years, Schroeder thinks the event has been going for several decades.

"I think it goes way back - 20 or 30 years. We used to have it at the high school many years ago," Schroeder said. "This is the venue we've been doing it at recently."

Most of the vendors were local, however, Schroeder said at least one came from as far away as Hancock.

As the building the historical society is housed in was built in the 1800s, it takes quite a bit of effort to maintain it. According to Schroeder, fundraisers - such as the craft fair - help defray costs. An upcoming focus for the society will be improving the building's electrical system.

Along with the annual craft fair, there was also a lunch - with the proceeds benefitting the VFW's auxiliary, which in turn supports various veterans projects in the area, according to organizers.
