Ontonagon — It’s the season for giving and the village of Ontonagon has received good tidings from the state of Michigan.
A $45,000 Recreation Passport grant was announced Tuesday for Lake Superior beach walkway lighting renovations.
The money will allow renovations to install new, more durable lamp poles with energy-efficient, dark-sky compliant LED lamp fixtures, the DNR said.
New benches, trash receptacles, bike racks and signs will also be installed along the beachfront park.
It is one of several grants announced for the Upper Peninsula.
Statewide, 36 communities will share $1,461,500 in Recreation Passport grants. Funding for the program is derived from sales of the Recreation Passport, the $11 annual pass that grants residents vehicle entry to state parks and recreation areas.
Other grants were awarded for playground development and renovations, sports and fitness facility development and improvements, trail and walkway development, park and picnic area improvements and improved access for people with disabilities.
The DNR said the selected projects were chosen from a field of 77 grant applications seeking $3,053,000 million.
Steve DeBrabander, MDNR grants manager, said, “This funding enables us to work together to improve quality of life and tourism in communities across the state.”
