Ironwood - The eighth annual Sisu Ski Fest that will begin on Friday, Jan. 6, will feature several changes in the events this year.

The main difference in the event are the changes in the distances for the races. The Sisu Ski Race has been shortened to 31 kilometers instead of its previous 42k. Also, the Heikki Lunta race has been shortened to a 15k race, instead of 21k.

According to race director Jackie Powers, "We think that these distances fit in better with such an early season race, for most people we're the first race of the season."

The changes were made to make the course a little safer by taking out some sections of the race that were harder to groom in previous years, said Powers.

Another change is the new 5k Fun Ski. For the past seven years there was a similar length event which featured a tasting tour, where participants would be able to enjoy food from around the area as they skied. This year, the Fun Ski has replaced the tasting tour. Fun Ski participants will join other racers in the Memorial Building to enjoy mojakka, a Finnish soup, and pasties.

Organizers hope the changes will bring an increase in numbers for all events.

Sisu VIII will also feature the Depot Dash on Friday, which is an event for children 10 and under who want to learn to cross country ski. It's an opportunity for them to try cross country skiing for the first time in a safe environment, said Powers.

Equipment will be provided for the children who are interested in participating.

Saturday's feature races, the 31k and 15k events, will start at ABR Ski Trails and end at the "Finnish Line" in downtown Ironwood.

According to Powers, a change in where the race ended last year will continue this year as it allows for Aurora Street to remain open.

Sunday will feature the 5k Snowshoe Race and a 2k Tour in Miners Memorial Heritage Park.
