The Department of Defense announced a shift in policy regarding honorably discharged veterans that will go into effect on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2017. On veteran’s Day, all honorably discharged veterans will gain limited online military exchange shopping privileges.
The online shopping excludes the purchase of uniforms, alcohol, and tobacco.
Peter Levine, acting for the under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness said, “We are excited to provide these benefits to honorably discharged veterans to recognize their service and welcome them home to their military family.”
The DOD expects opening up online shopping to all honorably discharged veterans will give a boost to Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs that service and are used by active duty and veteran families.
The DOD expects the exchange will double its business by opening up to non-retired veterans, improving the experience for all patrons through improved vendor terms, improved market efficiencies, and more competitive merchandise assortments.
