ONTONAGON, Mich. - John Leonard Marley, 88, of Ontonagon, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017.
He was born in Ontonagon on July 29, 1928, to Chauncey and Madeline Marley. John attended Ontonagon Schools and graduated from Morgan Park Military Academy in Chicago in 1946 and went on to serve in the Army Air Corps. John attended Northern Michigan University and went on to work as an electrician at the White Pine Copper Mine for 30 years, retiring in 1990.
On Sept. 24, 1983, John married Jeannette Johns. They made their home in Ontonagon and Okeechobee, Fla. Together they traveled the United States, Mexico and Canada. John enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, photography, gardening and spending time at the Bluff River Camp. He was an avid sports fan, particularly the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and college football.
John is survived by his wife, Jeannette; children, Mark Marley, Midge Axley, Maddie (Bill) Manderfield, Priscilla (David) Chynoweth, and Larry (Billy) Johns; sister, Arzelie Marley; brother-in-law, Mike (Mary) Utter; grandchildren, Mark Marley, Jamie Leonard, Michelle Strickland, Matthew Axley, Hannah Axley, Angela Voldarski, Catherine Manderfield, Jenna Manderfield, William Manderfield, Josiah Manderfield, Benjamin Chynoweth, Marley Chynoweth, Ferron Johns, Victoria Harmon, Bubba Harmon, Sawyer Jones, Seth Jones and Rowdy Johns; and many nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rose Marie Cayley and Patricia Carmella; and four sisters-in-law, Karen Rogers, Helen (Carl) Aho, Patsy (Bob) White and Geri Trainer.
Honorary pallbearers are Bob Axley, Hannah Axley, David Chynoweth, Ron Cook, Larry Johns, Mark Marley, Bill Manderfield and Ron Mauno.
Services for John Marley are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m., at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon with Father Michael Jacobus officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. until the time of service.
