Iron County voters head to polls for state election Tuesday

Iron County voters will join others around the state in heading to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in a single statewide race.

Incumbent State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers is facing a primary challenge from John Humphries and Lowell Holtz in the race to see who advances to the general election.

The top two vote getters will face off in the April 4 general election.

Evers has held the position for two terms; while Humphries is a former administrator turned consultant in Dodgeville and Holtz is retired after a career as a teacher, principal and superintendent.

Rick Melcher, a Racine math teacher, is also running in the election as a write-in candidate.

There is no Wisconsin Supreme Court race as Justice Annette Siegler is unopposed.

History indicates voter turnout will likely be low for Tuesday’s contest, with past three primaries for the superintendent post resulting in 5.9 percent of voters casting ballots.

Those voting in Hurley are expected to cast their ballots in the library, as the city hall’s main meeting room is being renovated, according to information from a recent city council meeting.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
