TROUT CREEK, Mich. - John Edwin Pelkola, 74, of Trout Creek passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 23, 2017.
John was born in Trout Creek to George and Esther (Salonen) on Aug. 25, 1942. He graduated from Trout Creek High School.
John married Joan Manning on Aug. 17, 1968. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University. He was a long-time industrial arts and drivers' education teacher for Ewen-Trout Creek High School.
In addition to his career as an educator, John was a public servant for more than 40 years. He started as the treasurer of Interior Township, later becoming the supervisor. Near his retirement from teaching, he became a commissioner of Ontonagon County. John was one of the founders of SONCO Ambulance and served on several subcommittees within the county.
He is survived by his two children, Theresa (Darrin) Viitala, of Marquette, and Chris (Linda) Pelkola, of Champion; grandchildren, Easton and Hunter Viitala, and Britney, Heidy and Natalie Pelkola; brothers George (Sharon) Pelkola, of Marquette, and Ken (Melanie) Pelkola, of Trout Creek; sister, Carolyn (Bob) Hietamaki, of Gwinn; and several nieces, nephews and great friends.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; and his parents.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. (EST) Thursday, March 2, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Trout Creek. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m.
Spring burial will be in the Trout Creek Cemetery.
