Bessemer - Charly Loper was seen Wednesday checking and re-checking survey results Bessemer residents sent in to city hall.
The city sent out 980 surveys to residents and received 296 responses. A 30 percent response rate far exceeded what city manager Loper was expecting. She was hoping for a 10 percent return rate.
What Loper discovered was the electronic reader was not sufficient to capture the responses. In many questions there was an option to respond with more than one answer and the electronic scanner was unable to differentiate between multiple responses, leaving Loper the task of going through each response and hand-tabulating the results to make sure the residents responses were captured properly.
When asked if Loper had any early insights or results to tease the public, Loper informed the Daily Globe she did not have anything finalized.
The results are raw and still being tabulated, but she did say it appears the city spoke with nearly one mind in its rejection of the planned move to three lanes from four on U.S. 2.
The city will publish results and place them on display in the auditorium in city hall on April 5 from 4 to 6:00 p.m.
Loper wanted to make sure people understand it will not be a meeting that will last for two hours. The results will be on display for the public to drop in, see and leave.
Posters will be available for people to write additional thoughts on the different topics covered in the survey, but it is not a two-hour meeting, for opportunity for a brouhaha to form.
