Hurley - Ross Peterson Construction, of Hurley, cast the apparent low bid Thursday of five received for the city of Hurley's summer infrastructure project, at $1,134,153.

Jeff Seamandel, of MSA Professional Services, the city's engineering company for the project, opened the sealed bids at city hall as representatives of the five companies awaited the results.

Seamandel was pleased that the apparent low bid was under the $1,210,000 his company had estimated for project costs.

The second lowest bid came from A-1 Excavating, which has done a great deal of work in the city, at $1,143,134.

FA Industrial Services bid $1,197,908; James Peterson and Sons, $1,323,394, and Snow Country Contracting, $1,363,870.

Seamandel said he will review the specific numbers of the bids and Mayor Joe Pinardi said the full city council will likely act on awarding a bid at its May meeting.

Work on the project could begin in May or June.

Reconstruction of Copper Street, from Second Avenue to Fourth Avenue, is a major part of the project, including replacement of sanitary sewer, waterman and storm sewers for that stretch.

The project will also include replacement of the sanitary sewer interceptor near the main sewer lift station, watermain work along U.S. 51 and considerable improvements to the water tank near Germania Hill. It will be repainted, coated in the interior and a mixer will be added to keep the water fresh.

Because of federal grants, the city will only be responsible for paying a minimum of 10 percent of project costs, according to MSA. The city council can use future tax increments from the Tax Increment District to pay for the costs above the grant amounts.
