Ironwood — Gary Mariani, golf course manager at the Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood said they opened the course April 8. The early melting and lack of rain dried out much of the course and made it playable earlier than normal.
Mariani said, “We did well the first week. Opened the club today and we still have golfers paying green fees!”
Mariani also described a Beginner’s Class he is planning on hosting in June. The class historically is made up of women looking to try golf. There is no need to bring equipment, not even golf balls. The country club will provide everything in an attempt to expose the women to golf in a friendly manner with other beginners. While the date is not set, Mariani said he expects the classes to be on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.
John Norvell was run into on the 10th hole. Norvell said Sunday was already his fourth time out golfing and he would have gone more but he wrenched his back. Norvell’s wife Michelle was caddying Sunday, but she is also picking up the game, just not on Sunday.
