Mercer, Wis. - Sandra Engler Hassberg, of Mercer, died at her home on Thursday, April 27, 2017,
Sandra "Sandy" was born March 10, 1941, to Ethelynn Johnson of Waukegan, Ill. She attended schools in Germany and in Waukegan.
On June 24, 1961, Sandy married Alan Engler of Webster Groves, Mo. Following Alan's discharge from the U.S. Navy, they lived in Waukegan. In August of 1971 Sandy, Alan, and their two children moved to Mercer. Throughout the years, Sandy worked for Tri-State Homes, Northern Highland State Bank and the Marshfield Clinic. She had a small day care in her home which welcomed numerous children and their families, and who eventually became extended family.
In addition to working outside the home, Sandy was a wonderful and loving homemaker for her family. She was involved in the Faith Lutheran Church in Mercer as well as a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Boulder Junction. In her younger years in Mercer, she played on the Mercer Shell Girls' Softball team and bowled with friends in a weekly league.
After Alan's death in 1996, Sandy married Hubert "Dick" Hassberg. Together they enjoyed spending summers fishing in Detroit Lakes, Minn. And it was with Dick that she became interested in, and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include her husband, Dick; a son, Todd (Mary) of Mercer; a daughter, Tammi (Bill) Burkart of Fond du Lac; grandchildren, D'Kota and Lexi Engler, and Alan and Sam Burkart; and the children and grandchild of the Hassberg family.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Alan; two infant daughters; and her mother.
Sandy was a wonderful loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mercer on Saturday, May 6, at 10 a.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., the Rev. Paul Devenatier officiating.
Fellowship and luncheon will follow.
